Chapter 01: The Black Gate

A signal is heard beneath the city after midnight, and the archive opens its first sealed door.

The city did not sleep. It listened.

Below the abandoned transit line, where the lights had been removed but the walls still remembered their numbers, a low tone began to gather. It was not music yet. It was a pressure in the teeth, a narrow vibration passing from rail to rail.

No one in the upper districts heard it. The archive heard it first.

The keeper placed one hand on the sealed register and waited until the paper warmed beneath her palm. A name appeared in black ink without a pen. Then another. Then a map of streets that had not been built.

At 03:17, the gate opened inward.
